Meet Dr. Richard Williams
It is a true privilege to be given the trust of my patients, to do something very personal for them. I never take that trust for granted. Because I make my living doing something I love, it feels as though I never have to go to work.
My initial interest in orthodontics was sparked by my family dentist and orthodontist. My teeth were a mess and I was fascinated by the improvement in my smile as I went through treatment. It was and is exciting to me to see the impact a healthy smile has on one’s self-esteem. I am honored by the trust each patient places in me, as they seek to improve their oral health and appearance. The most fun I get to have is the day we “uncover” the smile we have worked so hard, together, to create.
I have been blessed to have practiced here in Desoto County for my entire career; I came to Southaven in 1983, when I began my orthodontic residence, and I fell in love with the community. In September 1985, I opened my own practice. During the last 30 years, I have forged so many rewarding relationships with my patients and their families. It gives me great joy to now be treating second-generation patients: children of the children I treated in the past.
Education and Commitment to Continuing Education
- Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, University of Tennessee at Martin
- Doctorate of Dental Surgery, University of Tennessee Health Science Center Dental School
- Master of Science, University of Tennessee Health Science Center Dental School, Department of Orthodontics
I am very involved with organized orthodontics, seeking to both further my knowledge and skills, and to share my knowledge with others. I am the clinic director of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Tennessee Dental School and have been on the faculty since fall of 1985. There, I am involved in clinical supervision of treatment rendered by our residents, and I also teach practice management courses.
Throughout the year, I also attend seminars, symposiums, and meetings related to oral healthcare, learning about developing technologies and new treatment processes. Both my teaching and my participation in continuing education keep me exposed to the most current trends and techniques in orthodontics, and allow for me to provide the best care for my patients.

I was born in Jackson, TN, and grew-up in Savannah, TN. I currently live in Nesbit, MS, with my wife of 31-years, Cynthia (Cindy), who teaches at Northpoint Christian School. We have two daughters, Olivia and Meredith, both of whom are training to become physical therapists, and we have two schnauzers, Jake and Ellie, too.
One of my greatest privileges in life is to be a dad, so my passion outside of my faith is my family. I have been given a wonderful soul mate in Cindy and we have enjoyed every aspect of being parents. As a family, we probably cherish our trips to the beach the most. I personally enjoy anything outdoors, especially golfing, fishing, and duck hunting.
